Guidelines for Funerals and Memorial Services
 

 

I. General Guidelines

The following are the general guidelines for all funeral and memorial services conducted through Trinity United Church:

  • The clergy staff will endeavour to alternate with regard to follow up and responsibility for the service and pastoral care unless the other staff member is specifically requested.
  • Normally only one clergy need be involved in a service.
  • It is recommended that one Trinity United Church clergy preside at services conducted from the sanctuary of Trinity United Church.
  • Clergy have the editorial prerogative for the content of eulogies.
  • Clergy shall have final approval of music.
  • We encourage the use of the sanctuary for funerals and the use of a funeral pall.
  • The casket is to be closed prior to the funeral service.

II. Responsibilities of the Family

1. Choose either a funeral director or a transfer service.
a) If a funeral home is in charge of the service, they will co-ordinate all aspects of the funeral service, visitation, contacting clergy, etc.
b) If a transfer service is contracted, proceed to number 2.

2. When a transfer service is used to deal with the remains of the deceased, the following are the responsibility of the family if a memorial service is required:
  • Arrange for date, time and place of a memorial service.
  • Contact the minister or another person who is going to conduct the service.
  • Arrange for greeter(s) at the place of the service. This person has responsibility for the visitors' book and assisting people before the service.
  • Arrange for ushers.
  • Arrange for handling all memorial donations.
  • Provide the notice of death for radio and newspaper.
  • Arrange place, time and catering for the reception following the service, if desired.

3. The following may be provided by Trinity United Church if requested and in consultation with the family:

  • Organist
  • Choir
  • Custodian
